News & Updates

Hello, 2017!

By on January 23, 2017

New year, new post, time for an update–and hopefully this will not be my only post in 2017!

My apologies for the cobwebs on my blog, and the newsletter. This indie author thing has been different than I expected, and by that I mean reality has caught up with my starry-eyed idealism and not-so-gently whacked me upside the head.

Not to say that I don’t enjoy a challenge, or that the struggle isn’t worth it. Thankfully I’m stubborn enough to keep up the pursuit. But this has been a learning experience, to say the least.

I’ve been balancing my full-time job with book promotional stuff, scheduling events and book signings, trying to fight the anxiety of “now what??” to make progress on Book Two, and generally coping with the world going crazy around us. Some of these things I’ve accomplished better than others…

But again, new year, new goals. I’d love to make promises of what’s to come in 2017, but we all know how resolutions usually go.

However, I did come across this one idea after reading about it on Sarah Bessey’s blog–One Word–choosing a simple word to be a single focus for my year, summing up everything I want to do and be.

My word, which I’d like to share with you for accountability’s sake, is devotion. In the midst of my noisy life I want to be devoted, to be focused on those things on which I place value. Whether it be my job as a librarian, my relationship with God, or my writing, I want to pursue it this year with passionate devotion.

(I got this beautiful calligraphy from SunshineInkCo on Etsy)

If you are interested in doing this too, check out #OneWord365 here. Share your word with me in the comments!

I will try to write once a month on this topic–on devotion–as I take the year to explore what this word means to me, and how it will hopefully impact my life in 2017.

But now for more specific updates…

Book Two

Paladin is still in the stages of research. I’ve got to admit, I’m a little intimidated by this one, y’all. I’ve been studying the Civil War since I was 13, and I still don’t feel I have a good enough of a grasp on such a complex and fascinating subject. And I want to do my best for you. Right now I’m toying with another trip to Virginia to see Williamsburg… field trips definitely make research more fun!

I’ll be posting more about my journey and process, too, sharing what I learn (spoiler-free, of course). And, if you sign up for my newsletter, you can have access to sneak peeks and special updates as I go!

While I can’t give a good estimate for when Paladin will be released, my hope is that it will be by the end of the year. In the meantime, help me get Firebrand to more readers–leave reviews, share with friends, so we’ll have more to bring with us on our journey following Saoirse and her boys into the war.

Upcoming Appearances

Check out my Events Page for what I’ve got on my calendar. One I’m most looking forward to is the North Texas Irish Festival. This will be my first time there as a vendor, and I hope to have some cool new stuff to share at my booth. So if you’re in the Dallas area that weekend, please stop by and visit me!

Short Stories

While you’re waiting anxiously for Book Two, I do want to announce that I’ll be publishing my first three short stories in paperback and ebook form, with a few new bonus shorts as well! Be on the lookout for that in the next month or so. If you haven’t read them yet, you can online for free here!

Finally, I’ll be doing my best to stay active on this blog, but if I don’t post for awhile, know that I am working hard to continue Saoirse and Westleigh’s story, because I can’t find out what happens next, either. 😉

So follow/subscribe for updates, and look for my next newsletter this week!

Love you all. Happy New Year!
