Character Spotlight: Declan

By on February 24, 2016

Today’s final spotlight is on a character you will meet in next week’s short story, The Emigrant. I hope you’ve enjoyed this post series! (In case you’ve missed any, click here to read about the other characters of Firebrand.)

To keep from getting spoilery, I’m going to make this post a little shorter than the others. So, without further ado, meet Declan…

“Saoirse,” Declan muttered into his hands pressed against his face. “Please, just go back home. Keep your mouth shut. Tell Jack to behave himself. Please. And we might just get through all this…”

Declan Christopher Callahan and his twin brother, Aidan, were born on July 1, 1842 to Brian and Caitríona (see their family tree on Saoirse’s post). Declan, the younger and quieter of the twins, followed his charismatic brother everywhere. When their little sister Saoirse was born a few years later, Aidan and Declan spent much of their time watching over her–even if Declan was a bit jealous at times of Aidan’s attention being split between them.

When they boys got older, they began to make plans for the future–they would both go away to Dublin to study, strike out on adventures away from the dreary old house in Kilkavan. But that was before Aidan met Mary Donnelly…

(Find out what happens next when I release the final of the three short prequels to Firebrand next week, on March 1st.)

Here’s a little more I’ve discovered about Declan…
