Firebrand: The Orphan

By on February 1, 2016

Well, after much struggle, hair-pulling, and half a dozen rewrites, the second of the Firebrand short stories is here!

Texas, 1855

Orphaned and sold into slavery at twelve, Abigail has spent the last three years trapped in a house with the monster who claims to own her. Her days are filled with isolation and abuse-until she meets the neighbor’s misfit son, Jack, who makes her a dangerous offer of friendship. Abigail knows she must be careful if she hopes to survive. But how much longer can she survive the loneliness?

Read The Orphan today

This story proved far more difficult to write than The Outcast for many reasons, the greatest of which is the subject matter. I still cannot fathom the hate and the callousness that causes someone to enslave another human being. And it broke my heart to write this part of Abigail’s story, knowing that I had to leave her in the situation I found her in. But this is just a chapter, just a moment in her life, and I expect that it will at least leave you with hope.

Thanks for reading.

Look for the third and final short story–The Emigrant–in early March!

If you haven’t yet, don’t forget to read The Outcast. Let me know what you think!
